Obsessive Compulsive Designer

Obsessive Compulsive Designer

This book was done as a part of my graduate graphic design studio project. The project was to identify or manufacture a subculture, then identify its ideologies, unifying principles, core values, beliefs etc. After identifying the ideology, we had to articulate a methodology and design for the subculture.

I identified the subculture of people with OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. OCD has many types- repetition, cleanliness, order and symmetry, thoughts etc. I chose to work with OCD of order and symmetry for this project.

People with OCD who tend to be primarily preoccupied with order and symmetry tend to engage in compulsive behaviors that include repetitive arranging, repetitive tapping a certain number of times, organizing or lining up of objects until certain conditions are met or the end result feels "just right". Many a times it leads to procrastination or delay in work because the set conditions aren't right to begin. Only once the entire process of the work to be done is planned, the person feels relieved and can begin the work.

By the virtue of my OCD, I designed a visual book which shows what goes in a mind of an obsessive compulsive designer while designing a poster. There is a constant need for every element on the page to be in order for the poster to look right- be it the color, a line or the type. If it doesn't feel correct or if something is not working out, the discomfort and anxiety increases, which is depicted by the different levels of dots in the layout.
